Sidekick Quests Commissions! The McMullan Troop

These commissions were all requested by Michael McMullan. He generously commissioned artwork for all of his friend's characters. He is the kind of geek friend everyone should have. Here is the troop group shot and the individual character standee pieces.

During the past month or so I was privileged to be asked to make several commissions that would be given as gifts for the holidays. Since they were meant to be gifts I couldn't post them until after they had been given. It was one of the main motivators for creating the Advent of Evil actually. Since I was doing work but couldn't post any of it until after December I needed something to fill December up.

I'll post more 'lost' commissions throughout the week (including more commissioned by Michael oddly enough). Until then... enjoy the McMullan Troop!

In 2008 I decided that if I was going to live to see my kids have kids I couldn't weigh 400lbs. anymore... so I went on a strict calorie counting diet with help from a wonderful dietitian and lost around 150lbs. It has been three years and I have be fairly succesful in keeping the weight off. As of this morning I weigh 280lbs. Each year I celebrate my weight loss by setting aside one day where I can eat one of my favorite foods on Earth without feeling guilty about it. This Monday the 7th of November is that day. I ask you to join me in the celebration. Go out and eat a donut. I am sure you can think of a good reason you deserve one.

As you can see... I have decided to start taking commissions for DNDforDads style stuff. I can't bring myself to charge for the premade character sheets. Those I made for people to have fun with. But the illustration mercenary in me figures there are a few people who might like one of these sheets for their own PC. For those people this post exists. If you enjoy DNDforDads but don't want to spend any money... that is totally cool. I will keep releasing DNDforDads stuff free of charge. This is for people who have a little disposable Paypal money and want some custom made geek art. And it will help me keep at the whole DNDforDads thing. Which I think is cool and I hope you do too. This weekend I had the pleasure of being invited to participate in an art event at my favorite local comic book store, Tacoma's own COMIC BOOK INK. There several artists, myself and several of my fellow CLAW members, had 3 hours to draw a DC superhero to celebrate the relaunch of the DC Universe. I chose to draw the new armored Superman. This was done freehand with no underdrawing completely in chalk. It is also up against the other insanely good pieces of chalk art also created during the event in a contest in order to win CBI gift certificates. In order to vote in this contest you must 'LIKE' your favorite chalk piece on the COMIC BOOK INK Facebook fan page. This link will get you directly to my piece but I do urge you to look around at the other pieces of art and choose your favorites. Voting continues until the 9th.

So this morning I reposted the link to this post on Twitter (@jamesstowe if you'd like to follow me) and the response I got was pretty overwhelming. I've gone viral before with this blog but this was different. All day long actual people that play and talk and blog about Dungeons and Dragons let me know that they liked these sheets or retweeted the link to them or both. People who's writing about DND I follow and read regularly were responding not jsut to the art of these sheets... but to the sheet themselves. It wa pretty inspiring.

One thing was pretty regularly requested all day... high rez PDF versions of the sheets that could be downloaded and shared. So, that is what this is. All I ask is that you use these for good. Don't try to resell them or share them for profit. Don't pass them off as your work. Just ue them as intended... to help introduce an awesome game to people ten and under.

Now if you like them, well... I never turn down Donations. In fact, there is a Donation button right to the left of this post.

For my son's 8th birthday party he convinced me to run Dungeons and Dragons for four 2nd graders... I decided to take actual characters made in the DND Insider and simplify them us that the boys could have fun without much of a learning curve. Here are the six characters I made from scratch for the game. I am happy to report it was a huge success, each boy had a fantastic time... and so did I. I would happily do it again.

For some reason I appear to be unable to go long lengths of time without drawing a transformer toy character. In this case it is one from my childhood mixed with the style of my son's. This is Jazz as I would imagine he would look if he appeared on the new Transformers: Prime cartoon. It was made completely in Illustrator with zero underdrawing. Took about 2 hours. Let me know if you'd like to see more of these. Like I said... I appear compelled...

Today's BE A HERO event

Today I was lucky enough to be part of the BE A HERO fundrasing event for my friend's comic book shop... COMIC BOOK INK. I was one of nine artist donating time and artwork to patrons that donated whatever they can to help the Cartoonists League of Absurd Washingtonians raise money to help out the shop. Halfway through the event a very generous patron donated over $200.00 for 9 Team Fortress 2 watercolor sketches. I was happy to make them. I am posting some, if not all of them here.

This is the first of my Imperial March commissions. David Murray asked for "Brobi Wan Kenobi He is a meathead play on Obi Wan." So that is what I did. Once a failed jedi knight with a man crush on General obi Wan Kenobi the self styled Brobi became Darth Ombat when he predictably fell to the dark side. So thanks David. I hope you dig it.
